Gets you to your destination faster
The AVONA Callis was developed to bring the speed of racing bikes to gravel roads. The feeling of gliding over rough ground at high speed is simply incomparable. It's aerodynamic yet compliant, accommodating fast rolling tires while remaining comfortably light. Because we've paid attention to all aspects of performance, it's a truly versatile bike. Whether racing, exploring new roads or even as a road bike вЂ" the Callis does it all.
Aero meets gravel
Aerodynamics play an even greater role on gravel than on asphalt: you often cover long distances, are exposed to the wind, ride alone or in small groups. The less air you stir up, the faster and longer you can ride. That's why we invested a lot of time in design and CFD studies to keep drag as low as possible without compromising other important performance factors such as weight, stiffness or vertical compliance. During development, it quickly became clear that the biggest advantage was to be found at the front end of the bike. This led to the distinctive extension of the head tube at the leading edge. In the GST wind tunnel, we were finally able to demonstrate a reduction in drag of 25 W compared to a competitor's bike with already aerodynamic features.
Vertical compliance
Vertical compliance is particularly important when you are riding on gravel. It ensures that you feel comfortable on uneven surfaces and at the same time can call on your best performance to put the watts directly onto the pedals. But that's not all: studies have shown that a bike with integrated compliance is even faster on rough asphalt than a rigid model. That's why we opted for a sloping top tube, which gives the slender seat post more room to allow this compliance.
Tire clearance
Which tires are fastest depends on the terrain and speed of course, but in many cases a wider tire is the best choice. The Callis offers space for tires up to 50 mm wide, so you can find the ideal traction and speed for any terrain.
Storage space
It is important to be well prepared for long rides. Our well thought-out storage solution in the down tube gives you the option of stowing tools, snacks and your rain jacket safely and practically вЂ" without additional air resistance and with a low center of gravity. So you have everything you need with you without compromising on aerodynamics or riding stability.
Sealed headset cap
When developing the headset cap, we paid a lot of attention to detail. The two-piece part is made of fiber-reinforced material and is overmolded with silicone seals that prevent water from penetrating the frame and bearings. This keeps everything dry and working perfectly, whatever the weather.
Specification highlights вЂ" a 40-watt package
When selecting the components, we worked hard to put together the best overall package. And the best thing about it: most of these parts are with you, regardless of the group you choose. The Faserwerk Luftschneider cockpit and DT GRC wheels improve aerodynamics, while the Caracal Race tires from Hutchinson (supplied tubeless) ensure incredibly fast acceleration. As with all our bikes, we have also treated the chain with the Ceramicspeed UFO treatment to further reduce friction.
All of these choices result in a 40 watt saving at a typical gravel race speed of 35 km/h. Best of all, most of these components are included in all of our models, even the SRAM Rival level. As you can see in the graph below, we haven't just focused on a single aspect of performance вЂ" you'll benefit from the increase in efficiency even at a recreational speed of 25 km/h.
